With its 1-inch sensor, the new DJI Air 2S brings a new standard to the Air series of drones. But what does a 1-inch sensor mean, and just how important is it? Read on to find out…

A camera’s sensor size determines the amount of light that can be processed to create an image. So a larger sensor allows the camera to take in more information than a smaller sensor, which it then uses to create a more detailed image. DJI Air 2S, the latest drone in the Air series lineup, now has an upgraded 1-inch sensor, offering an improved image quality compared to its predecessors.

Low-Light Performance

When it comes to low-light performance, a bigger sensor is critical as it’s able to take in and process more information. The 1-inch sensor on DJI Air 2S allows for the individual pixels to be larger. The purpose of a pixel is to absorb light and produce an electrical signal, which is then converted into a digital image signal. The more light the sensor can absorb, the stronger the image signal will be. So, a sensor with larger pixels will collect more light data and have better performance in low-light situations. A bigger sensor will allow users to shoot at a lower ISO, which produces cleaner overall images. This is especially noticeable when looking at image noise as any errant information can be averaged out to produce a more accurate final image.

So, if you’re someone who tends to take shots early in the morning or late in the evening, having the larger sensor of DJI Air 2S is the way to go.

Greater Dynamic Range

We’ve all been there. You take a photo, get super excited to edit and enhance it, only to find out that you’ve clipped the highlights. The larger sensor and bigger pixels on DJI Air 2S mean that each pixel can collect more information compared to smaller pixels. This allows for more information in both the highlights and shadows of an image, letting users capture richer details and more nuance in any environment.

More Room for Editing in Post

All of this means that you have more freedom when it comes to your editing once you get back home! Whether it’s brightening up a dark image, recovering details in the shadows/highlights, pushing colors further, or even cropping.

Bigger Sensor, Same Compact Size

A larger sensor usually means a larger, heavier drone, but not with DJI Air 2S . Despite this new 1-inch sensor capable of shooting 4K60fps video, DJI Air 2S still weighs less than 600g and is capable of fitting into smaller bags, making it the perfect drone to take with you on your next trip.

Conclusion

With its one-inch sensor and intelligent features – such as ActiveTrack 4.0 and MasterShots – DJI Air 2S delivers excellent results no matter your need. Whether it be a professional photo shoot or a travel video, DJI Air 2S is ready.
